The Altamira cave in Northern Spain contains some of the world’s most beautiful prehistoric rock paintings. UNESCO declared the cave a World Heritage Site in 1985. The paintings were an influence on Pablo Picasso, perhaps the most famous of all Spanish artists.

Spain is one of the most geographically varied countries in Europe. It its mountainous, with over 75% of the country over 500 meters above sea level, and 25% over a kilometer above sea level. Portions of southeastern Spain are desert-like, yet Spain has more land covered by vineyards than any other nation in the world. Spain also has over 8,000 kilometers of beaches.
