Persian

The basic design of the current Iran flag is three horizontal bands (green above white above red) symbolizing Islam, peace, and courage. The coat of arms of Iran is placed in the center of the white band; this is meant to have multiple meanings, but is essentially a geometrically symmetric form of the word Allah as well as overlapping parts of the Islamic phrase "la ilaha illa Allah" (there is no god but Allah), forming a monogram.
Though commonly known to Western nations as Iran, the two possible names for the country are Iran and Persia. Until 1935, the name Persia was the "official" name of Iran in the world, but Persian people inside the country since the Sassanid period have called it Iran, meaning "the land of Aryans." On March 21, 1935, Reza Shah Pahlavi announced that all western countries should use the name Iran.l
