With an estimated population of 1.12 billion, India is the largest democracy in the world and the second most populous country. India is also the second most culturally, linguistically and genetically diverse geographical entity after the African continent.
Four major world religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism – originated in India. Over 800 million Indians, or about 80.5% of the country's population, are Hindu. The next-largest religious group is Muslims, who make up 13.4% of the population.
