Austria was the birthplace of many important artists, philosophers and scientists, including Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Gustav Mahler, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Popper, Gregor Mendel, Sigmund Freud, and Stefan Zweig.
The Botanic Garden in Vienna, the Austrian capital, contains more than 9,000 species of plants. The gardens date back to 1754 when Empress Maria Theresa founded the Hortus Botanicus Vindobonensis with renowned botanist Nikolaus von Jacquin as one of its first directors.
